UK Budget In 1996

The UK government’s budget in 1996 was £ 315 billion. This pie chart shows what the government spent the money on, divided into ten categories.

The government spent most money, by far, on social security, £100 billion. This was almost twice as much as the next category, health which cost £ 53 billion. The next biggest sector was education, which received £38 billion. Education is very important to improve society. This chart also shows defence , debt interest and other expenditure which had similar levels of spending , £ 22 billion for defence, £ 25 billion for debt interest, and £ 23 billion for other expenditure. The law and order had £17 billion which includes police, but housing, heritage and environment spent £15 billion. £13 billion was spent on industry, agriculture and employment. Lastly, transport had £9 billion which is the lowest category.
The most striking feature of the chart is that social security and health expenditure combined accounted for almost a half of the UK budget in 1996.
